The movement advocates for a view that mental health disorders are just \"differences in cognition\" when in fact, these conditions come with very real innate harms. Advocates for the movement distance themselves from and discourage the use of terms like \"disability\" and go as far as to say that our disorders are a superpower or advantage. They also discourage the use of medication and other treatments which are proven to be highly effective and life-changing for those who need them. We find this is ableist and dismissive of those who require higher levels of care.\n\nHere are some reads on why and how the movement is harmful: [1](https://www.spectrumfamilypractice.com/single-post/2017/05/15/the-neurodiversity-movement-is-dangerous) | [2](https://aeon.co/essays/why-the-neurodiversity-movement-has-become-harmful)\n\n[This post](https://www.reddit.com/r/ADHD/comments/ms95dl/radhds_position_on_neurodiversity/) from r/ADHD describes our stance as well on the neurodiversity *movement*.\n\nWhere we differ from r/ADHD is we don’t take a hard-line stance against using the terms “neurodiverse” and “neurodivergent”. We find these terms can be super helpful in describing ourselves and our relationship with other people with neurodevelopmental and mental health disorders. We take a stance against the movement that tries to deny the real impairments and disabilities we face and tries to deny us life-changing and potentially life-saving treatment. We do accept the use of these terms in the pure definition of “not neurotypical” though, in a reclamatory way.\n\nTo summarize and paraphrase: \"ADHD is not a superpower, and we must find ways to alleviate any distress or suffering it may cause. We do not encourage giving our disorder the credit for the things we achieve. Our achievements are in spite of the challenges we face, not because of them.\""}Raw JSON
