{=(floor):FLOOR~The floor is just as clean as the floors outside... mostly. It’s hard to ignore the taped outline of a body, for instance, or the blood pooled on the floor. It’s still glistening, red and wet.

There’s a different bit of blood that catches your eye, though. The spatter is a little unusual, in that the arc of blood seems to have sprayed away from the body and towards the door. Judging by the placement, in fact, you’re not sure if this blood came from the body at all.

{=(walls):walls~You expect to find blank, boring walls. Instead, the walls here are plastered with artwork—mostly watercolor paintings done on sketchbook paper, but you see pencil drawings and oil paintings, among other mediums. Most of the artwork is of landscapes, both famous ones you’ve seen photographs of and ones that seem straight out of an ideal countryside. A few pictures are of birds or flowers. You don’t see any paintings with human subjects.~784848~...}

{=(table):GUEST TABLE~A table situated by the window with a few chairs, clearly meant for any guests the defendant has over. A couple of sketchbooks are stacked here, along with a tea set with a purple tulip motif. The seats are plush and comfortable, made of dark, heavy wood. A library copy of *Carmilla* sits with a bookmark tucked into the latter half of the pages by one of the chairs.

Near the same chair is a small wooden box and a circle of wood with a cloth stretched over its opening, a flower half-embroidered into the center. (Is that an azalea?) The box contains a colorful assortment of threads and cloth scraps, as well as a flat box with needles in several different sizes. One needle seems to be missing.

{=(bedside table):BEDSIDE TABLE~A bedside table made of heavy, dark wood. There’s a simple oil lamp, a glass that’s probably usually full of water, and an eclectic collection of medicine bottles, from tinctures to pills to powders. A small piece of notepaper details the medication, time, and dosage each is supposed to be taken in detail.

That’s... a lot. Wow.
~784848~...}

{=(closet):CLOSET~This closet seems to have been partially repurposed; about half of it contains clothes for the room’s inhabitant, with skirts, dresses, blouses and sweaters all folded or hanging neatly. The other half has spare hospital linens and cleaning supplies.

Huh, strange. Is it just your imagination, or are there fewer linens in the closet than there should be?
~784848~...}

{=(door):ROOM DOOR~The door to the room. The latch is broken; you presume that happened when the nurses broke the door down. The room was locked from the inside, and only the defendant and victim were found inside.

As you inspect the broken latch, you see a tiny, almost imperceptible hole just beneath the latch hinge. It looks like it was made with a pin.

{=(bed):HOSPITAL BED~A standard-issue hospital bed, with attachments for various medical equipment. It’s been outfitted with a handmade quilt; you can see the stitches on each square, feel the texture of each piece of fabric just by looking at it.

...You notice the edge of something peeking out *beneath* the mattress. Looks like it’s the corner of a book. Whatever it is, it’s well hidden; if you weren’t a trained investigator, you never would have seen it. Whoever put it there definitely didn’t want it to be found.
~784848~...}

{=(beneath):BENEATH THE MATTRESS~You have to crouch and worm your hand between the mattress and the bedside table to reach this. It’s well hidden; you never would have noticed it if you weren’t being so thorough with your investigation or weren’t looking for it specifically, you never would have seen whatever *it* is. But you get a good grip on it and pull it out.

You’ve found a leather-bound spiral journal. It looks old and worn; the pages are curling, and the satin bookmark is crumpled up. Flipping it open, you find the first entry: February 12th, 19XX...
